“I only hope that we don’t lose sight of one thing – that it was all started by a mouse.” That little mouse would forever change the fate of Walt Disney, co-creator of one of the World’s most iconic character, Mickey Mouse. The creation of Mickey Mouse would later propel Walt Disney and Co. to new heights, to some of which would include: groundbreaking animated motion pictures, countless productions, and the birth of the Happiest Place on Earth: Disneyland. And we mustn’t forget about the Disney world created from Mickey Mouse: the movie studios, television shows, musical talent, and Disney themeparks throughout the world. Yes, let’s not forget that it all began with that little mouse.

But what about the creator Walt Disney? Not much attention is given to Walt Disney (nor co-creator Ub Iwerks) because all the light is usually shining on his creations, but one must wonder what was his inspiration for Mickey Mouse was, right? And, having created something so spectacular, Walt Disney must’ve had a fascinating upbringing, right? I’ve always wondered about the man behind the mouse. Luckily for us, we’ve got The Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco, located in the Presidio.

The museum illuminates Walt’s fascinating life: his tremendous successes as well as his disappointments, and his unyielding optimism as he worked tirelessly to advance the art of animation. Walt was a risk-taker who influenced popular culture through pioneering animated and live-action films, television programs, theme parks, and other new technologies. His story is told through innovative, interactive galleries. Visitors get to know Walt through early drawings and animation, movies, music, and listening stations featuring his own voice, among others. A 13-foot model of Disneyland as Walt originally envisioned it is a perennial favorite with museumgoers.
